The report, "PATH Technology Roadmap: Advanced Panelized Construction"
(Year One Progress Report) is one in a
series of technology roadmaps developed to help the
housing industry make informed decisions about research
and development (R&D) investments. The Advanced
Panelized Construction roadmap focuses specifically on
panelized construction systems and processes, which can
bring the benefits of mass production into the highly
customized residential market through pre-production of
building components and integration of parts into
subsystems.

The vision for Advanced Panelized Construction is to
develop common building panels that perform multiple
tasks using non-specific material specifications that not
only deliver consistent levels of performance, but are
also easy to order, deliver, assemble, and integrate with
the building process. Ideally, the building panel
achieves lower in-place cost than the individual pieces
and individual tasks it replaces or integrates. This
approach furthers each of PATH's goals by helping to
achieve lower in-place costs, increased energy
efficiency, durability, and increased safety in building
envelope construction.

Three strategies for achieving the vision set forth in
Advanced Panelized Construction were devised, including:
o Design, engineer, and develop adaptable,
standardized, multiple-use panels that achieve
multiple functions for walls, floors, or roof
surfaces of a building envelope.
o Develop performance requirements at various levels
and engineering methods to analyze, design, and
specify panel systems, including connection and
interface protocols and standards for ease of use.
o Create a more effective and efficient production,
delivery, and site assembly process for panelized
building systems.

Benefits of each strategy and roadmaps for implementation
strategies are discussed in the full report.

This latest PATH technology roadmap identifies research
needs for developing advanced building panel design;
establishing common standards, specifications, and
interfaces; and improving production, delivery systems,
and site assembly. By addressing these issues through
research, the home building industry will continue to
play a key role in providing affordable, durable housing
for America's families.
