I am leaving the Joint Center for Housing Studies to go back to graduate school, and we are therefore hiring for a new researcher.  The job description follows:


POSITION DESCRIPTION

Joint Center for Housing Studies

Harvard University

Title:     Research Assistant IV/Research Specialist
Grade:    55

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITY:

An informed and integral member of the Joint Center research staff, conducts economic and demographic research related to housing, financial services and mortgage markets, and home improvement markets for Harvards nationally recognized housing research center. 

SPECIFIC DUTIES:
  • Develops, designs and conducts economic and demographic research related to housing through analysis of large-scale databases, including the American Housing Survey, Current Population Survey, and Residential Finance Survey.
  • Initiates, constructs and carries out complex research methods, procedures and plans related to home improvement activities, both independently and in collaboration with colleagues in the Centers Remodeling Futures research program and other sponsored research projects.
  • Writes reports, working papers, and journal articles independently and in collaboration with senior faculty.
  • Designs and delivers research presentations to outside experts, government officials, sponsors, and media; speaks with journalists and others requesting information.
  • Coordinates day-to-day research activities for the Remodeling Futures Group, including activities of the Building Materials Distribution Study and the Industrial Economists Discussion Group.
  • Serves as source of information or reference on specific research methods; may train others in statistical analysis procedures.
  • Represents the Joint Center through active membership in professional associations, participation in conferences, seminars, and symposia.
  • Performs other duties as required.

REQUIREMENTS:

Master's degree preferred; Bachelors degree in economics or related field required, with 2-4 yearsrelevant experience conducting research for a university research center, business, trade organization or government agency.  Must have extensive experience working with and manipulating large-scale databases, and should be proficient in one or more statistical software packages including STATA, SPSS or SAS.  Strong oral and written skills required--must have some public speaking experience.  Strong analytical and organizational skills required.
