AHS: Help with MS-Access

HUD.GOV HUDUser.gov
eList

From time to time I get calls or emails from people who are trying to import one of the AHS ASCII files into Microsoft Access. Such people are usually not familiar with the statistical software packages more commonly used to analyze the AHS datasets. I am unable to give them much in the way of advice, because my knowledge of MS-Access is pretty limited. One problem seems to be that Access' standard import capability is limited in the number of fields it can read, and the newhouse file has far more too many. This means that the file is truncated, and the users can't find the variables they need.

If anyone has experience importing AHS data into MS-Acesss, or even general knowledge about importing "wide" datasets into Access, I would appreciate it if you would send me an email about how you do it. By all means reply to the whole list if you like, since there are probably other subscribers who would find the information useful.
