The 2002 Government Sponsored Enterprises (GSE) mortgage
data series is now available - adding an eighth year to
the data series, which has been published on a near-
annual basis beginning in 1993.

The 2002 data shows single family and multifamily
mortgage purchases by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The new
dataset is also the fifth year during which the data
reflects the GSE housing goals specified by HUD in
December 1995 - including goals for purchases in
"underserved" census tracts and non-metropolitan
counties, defined in terms of their median incomes and
percentage minority populations.

GSE mortgage data supply mortgage lenders, planners,
researchers, and housing advocates with a wealth of
information concerning the flow of mortgage credit and
capital into America's communities. Fannie Mae and
Freddie Mac are required to meet specified goals for
purchases of mortgages that finance housing for very
low-, low-, and moderate-income families and families
living in areas traditionally underserved by the mortgage
market.

In their role as GSEs, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac supply
HUD with data on each mortgage loan that falls within
their purview. The single-family dataset includes
detailed information, including such criteria as the
income, race, and gender of the borrower, as well as
census tract location, loan-to-value (LTV) ratios,
seasoning, purchase/refinancing, and affordability. The
data also include property and unit-class information on
all multifamily properties acquired by the GSEs.
Property-level data include information on the size of
the property (categorized by unpaid principal balance
[UPB]), and type of seller/service from which the GSE
purchased the mortgage. The multifamily unit-class file
includes information on the number, type, and
affordability of the units.

The single-family dataset consists of three data files
for 2002: Census Tract, National A, and National B files.
The Census Tract file includes information on the
location of the property, while the National files are
stripped of geographic information. The multifamily
dataset consists of two data files for each year: Census
Tract and National files. The National file of the
multifamily dataset excludes location information.
The single-family and multifamily datasets covering the
entire nation are available on CD-ROM (ASCII format).
Single-family Census Tract data are also available in
extracts for individual States and Metropolitan
Statistical Areas (MSAs) on IBM PC-compatible diskettes
(ASCII format). Multifamily Census Tract data are
available on diskette, as are Multifamily National data.
Also included is a "Data Dictionary" that describes the
elements in each dataset and contains files that give
State, MSA, and county names corresponding to numeric
codes, as well as identifying non-metropolitan counties
that are considered to be underserved based on HUD's
geographical targeting criteria.

Subject: AHS codebook errors, questions, difficulties?

AHS Users-

        We’re going to be producing another version of the AHS Codebook in a
couple of weeks.  This version will include a new field about whether or not
Censusis adjusting the variable for confidentiality reasons.

        But, as long as we’re producing a new version, it is an opportunity to
correct mistakes, remove confusion, make things easier to use, etc.  If people
have suggestions, requests, or corrections, for the next round of the codebook,
could you please let me know by September 5th, and we’ll see what we’re able to
accommodate.
