AHS: New Orleans 2009 Metropolitan Data Released

The dataset from the 2009 American Housing Survey metropolitan survey of the New Orleans metropolitan area is now available for download in SAS and ASCII formats from the HUD USER web site, https://www.huduser.gov/portal/datasets/ahs.html.

The American Housing Survey last visited New Orleans in 2004, one year before Hurricane Katrina. The 2009 survey demonstrates the changes wrought by the hurricane and subsequent rebuilding efforts. The survey instrument included special items on the experience of New Orleans residents after the hurricane and on housing modifications as a result of damage from the storm. The web page includes a document describing these special variables. The documentation will be included in the regular AHS codebook, which is still undergoing revision for the 2009 data.

The New Orleans survey page also includes an archive of descriptive statistics, a SAS program to transform the distributed data into a single flat file (for users who prefer that format), instrument item booklets in English and Spanish, and a copy of the survey instrument, which you can download and run on Windows-based computers.

HUD is planning to hold a conference in Washington, DC in March 2011 on early results using 2009 AHS data, including the national, New Orleans, and (forthcoming) Seattle datasets. The deadline for submitting abstracts is September 17. (We realize that, given that you haven't seen the data yet, the resulting papers will necessarily be works in progress.)
