Housing Stock*
At the end of the fourth quarter of 2001, the estimate of the total housing stock, 121,963,000 units, was up a statistically insignificant 0.6 percent from the third quarter of 2001 and increased a statistically insignificant 1.5 percent above 2000's fourth-quarter level. The number of occupied units increased a statistically insignificant 0.7 percent from 2001's third quarter and rose 1.1 percent above the fourth quarter of 2000. Owner-occupied homes increased a statistically insignificant 0.6 percent from the third quarter of 2001 and were up 1.8 percent above the past year's fourth quarter. Rentals increased a statistically insignificant 1.0 percent from the previous quarter and declined a statistically insignificant 0.5 percent from the fourth quarter of 2000. Vacant units were down 0.1 percent from the past quarter but increased 5.0 percent from 2000's fourth quarter.

Vacancy Rates
The homeowner vacancy rate, at 1.8 percent, was down a statistically insignificant 0.1 percentage point from the third quarter of 2001 but was up 0.2 percentage point from the fourth quarter of 2000. The 2001 fourth-quarter national rental vacancy rate, at 8.8 percent, increased a statistically insignificant 0.4 percentage point from the previous quarter and was up 1.0 percentage point from the same quarter of 2000.

Homeownership Rates
The national homeownership was 68.0 percent in the fourth quarter of 2001. The rate was down a statistically insignificant 0.1 percentage point from the past quarter but was up a 0.5 percentage point from the fourth quarter of 2000. The homeownership rate for minority households, an all-time high of 49.5 percent, increased a statistically insignificant 0.3 percentage point from the third quarter of 2001 and increased 0.8 percentage point from the fourth quarter of 2000. The 62.4-percent homeownership rate for young households, a new high, was up a statistically insignificant 0.1 percentage point from the third quarter of 2001and increased 0.6 percentage point from 2000's fourth quarter.
