Seattle, Washington: Prioritizing Health in Public Housing Redevelopment

HUD User publishes a series of case studies based on federal, state, and local strategies that increase affordable housing opportunities and support sustainable community development. The projects and community development efforts featured in these reports have demonstrated innovation through a multitude of partnerships and initiatives.

Seattle Housing Authority's Breathe Easy program at Yesler Terrace won the 2016 HUD Secretary's Award for Healthy Homes in the category of Cross-Program Coordination among Health, Environment, and Housing. Implemented as part of the redevelopment of the Yesler Terrace public housing complex, the Breathe Easy program earned recognition for Seattle Housing Authority's collaboration with other city agencies and organizations to install home features that reduce indoor pollutants and provide supportive services to encourage healthy behavior.
