Message from PD&R Leadership:
Housing and Food Insecurity
In the leadership message, director of PD&R's Research Utilization Division Rachelle Levitt discusses the relationship between housing and food insecurity. Residents of low-income neighborhoods often have limited access to healthy foods, leading to increased incidence of negative health outcomes. Levitt explains the multi-faceted problem of food insecurity and profiles a Kansas community gardening program that addresses the issue.

In Practice:
Bridging a Gap in Affordable Housing for Families in Phoenix
Opened in spring 2016, Parsons Village provides 48 units of permanent supportive housing for chronically homeless families in Phoenix, Arizona. All residents of the $10.8 million development receive rental subsidies; the city provides project-based vouchers for 20 units, while developer, owner, and service provider United Methodist Outreach Ministries subsidizes the remaining 28 units and ensures that no family is rent-burdened. Parsons Village features a community center and children's playground.

Trending:
Building HUD's Capacity To Partner With Philanthropy
HUD's Office for International and Philanthropic Innovation (IPI) provides resources, tools, and advice to help develop robust partnerships between HUD and philanthropic foundations. In addition to supporting HUD initiatives such as EnVision Centers and Promise Zones, IPI trains federal staff, which helps to expand the department's capacity to partner with philanthropy. Public-philanthropic partnerships broaden the reach of both sectors' investments.
