INVENTORY
Housing Stock*
As of the second quarter of 2001, the estimate of the total housing
stock, 121,615,000 units, was up a statistically insignificant 0.4 percent
from the first quarter of 2001 and increased a statistically insignificant
1.8 percent above 2000s second-quarter level. The number of occupied
units remained unchanged from the first quarter of 2001 but rose 1.4
percent above the second quarter in 2000. Owner-occupied homes increased
a statistically insignificant 0.2 percent from the first quarter of
2001 and were up 2.1 percent above the past years second quarter.
Rentals decreased a statistically insignificant 0.4 percent from the
past quarter and declined a statistically insignificant 0.1 percent
from the second quarter of 2000. Vacant units were up 3.5 percent from
the past quarter and increased 4.7 percent from 2000s second quarter.

Vacancy Rates
The homeowner vacancy rate, at 1.8 percent, was down 0.3 percentage
point from the first quarter of 2001 and was down 0.3 percentage point
from the second quarter of 2000. The 2001 first-quarter national rental
vacancy rate, at 8.3 percent, was a statistically insignificant increase
of 0.1 percentage point from the previous quarter and was up a statistically
insignificant 0.3 percentage point from the same quarter of 2000.

Homeownership Rates
The national homeownership was 67.7 percent in the second quarter
of 2001. The rate was up a statistically insignificant 0.2 percentage
point from the past quarter and was up 0.5 percentage point from the
second quarter of 2000. The homeownership rate for minority households
increased a statistically insignificant 0.3 percentage point from the
first quarter of 2001 and increased 1.2 percentage points, from the
second quarter of 2000. The 61.0-percent homeownership rate for young
households was up 0.6 percentage point from the first quarter of 2001
and increased 0.7 percentage point from 2000s second quarter.
