The 2007 National Trust/HUD Secretary's Award for
Excellence in Historic Preservation was awarded to
Hilliard Homes, a modernistic public housing complex
designed by architect Bertrand Goldberg. The $99.3
million rehabilitation project was part of the city of
Chicago's effort to improve the quality and culture of
its public housing. Completed in downtown Chicago in
1966, the development is a well-known, cast concrete
complex on 12.5 acres that contains 654 restored
residential units for low-income families and seniors.
The site includes two arc-shaped towers, two cylindrical
towers, a community building surrounded by landscaped
grounds, and an open-air amphitheater.
