Intergenerational Housing Needs

HUD and the U.S. Census Bureau have completed a study
entitled Intergenerational Housing Needs and HUD Program
Options: Report to Congress. This report used 2000
Census and American Housing Survey data to clarify the
housing issues faced by grandparents and other relatives
who accept the responsibility of providing care for
minor children. The research is in response to a
Congressional mandate to determine an estimate of the
number of such families in the United States who are
covered by the LEGACY Act of 2003, and to identify their
affordable housing needs. The study further explores how
the major assisted housing programs of the Department of
Housing and Urban Development, including the supportive
housing for the elderly program under Section 202 of the
Housing Act of 1959, can be used, amended, or altered to
meet the affordable housing needs of eligible
intergenerational families.
