HUD's Office of Policy Development and Research (PD&R)
recently published two new Comprehensive Housing Market
Analysis reports for Colorado Springs, Colorado and
Modesto, California. Colorado Springs serves as an
economic service center for its Housing Market Area
(HMA) and the southern part of Colorado. It also houses
four military bases that have generated 4,700 new jobs
in the last 12 months. The report explores the impact of
the strong military presence on the local economy, and
the housing market in particular.

Since 2000, Modesto has evolved from an agricultural
community to a suburb of the San Francisco Bay Area with
a service-based economy. The area has also experienced
increasing homeownership and stimulated housing demand,
both of which result from the net in-migration from the
Bay Area.

Prepared by field economists in PD&R's Economic and
Market Analysis Division, these reports include analyses
of trends in labor and employment, population change,
and the housing market, as well as forecasts for housing
production. The Comprehensive Housing Market Analysis of
Colorado Springs and Modesto are available online
at www.huduser.gov/portal/publications/econdev/mkt_analysis.html.
