The Influence of Household Formation on Homeownership Rates

HUD's Strategic Plan for FY2003-FY2008 contains a mandate
to increase minority homeownership. The decision to form
a household might influence the decision to own one's
home. This study explores whether the gap between
minority and white homeownership rates might be explained
by differences in decisions about forming a household.
The study, "The Influence of Household Formation on
Homeownership Rates Across Time and Race," uses the
Public Use Micro Sample data of the decennial census from
1970 through 2000 to model the relationship between
household formation and homeownership. Drawing on the
literature, a number of variables were included as
controls in the study - gender, education, family
structure, disability status, census region, immigrant
status, and family income - to isolate the effects of age
and race.
