Subject: AHS 2005 Web Site Update

The web site for the 2005 American Housing Survey has been
updated with a new descriptive statistics zip file and a new
file flattener program. The URL of the web page is
https://www.huduser.gov/portal/datasets/ahs.html .

The descriptive statistics zip file has two additional files:
The "alltabs" file contains selected tables computed from the
microdata using the publication's table specifications. The
"allcomp" file compares totals for selected tabulation items,
for the 2003 and 2005 datasets.

The new file flattener incorporates a very minor change. We
discovered that if we set the SAS compress option to
COMPRESS=BINARY instead of COMPRESS=YES, the resulting flat
file is about 100 MB smaller on our hard disks (a savings of
about 50 percent). The new flat file incorporates that
change. There is no functional change to the dataset produced
by the program--it just takes up less disk space. Thus, there
is no need to download the updated program if you already have
a working flat file.
