Since I've received a number of replies concerning the smoke detector
message, I asked my Census colleagues to give me the wording of the
new fire safety questions that will be on the 2007 American Housing
Survey.  As with all new items, we had to trim the industry
suggestions in order to fit the instrument and concentrate on
information that the respondents would reasonably be expected to know.

Here is what we will be including.  There are 6 questions.  The
wording is a little different for occupied and vacant units as well
as or different structure types.  This is the text for occupied
single detached units:

1.  Do you have a working smoke detector inside your house?

2.  Is your smoke detector powered by electricity, batteries or both?

3.  Have the batteries in your smoke detector been replaced in the
past 6 months?

4.  Do you have a fire extinguisher in your home that was purchased
or recharged in the last 12 months?

5.  Do you have a fire sprinkler system inside your house?

6.  Do you have a working carbon monoxide dectector inside your house?
