Vacancy data in the AHS

Is there a recent discussion of the vacancy data in the AHS and how it compares to other sources for this data published or posted somewhere, particularly in determining the rent ranges for vacant units?  I found policy.rutgers.edu/andrews/courses/phd/hvd.htm and http://www.census.gov/hhes/www/housing/vacanciesfactsheet.html and Eric Belsky's 1992 Article in Housing Policy Debate.  If there are other treatments or lessons learned please let me know.  Or if there is some "common knowledge" about using these data that would be appreciated.
