coding family relations

Is there standard coding for determining, using the AHS microdata, the number of households that are traditional nuclear families (married with children) as well as those where there is a single parent? I tried using HHMAR, PER, REL, and FAMTYP with mixed results. Also, the table specifications contain variables (such as KID and variations) not in the public use file. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. Thanks.
