Female Householders?

I'm wondering about how folks use the "householder" designation and
particularly the HHSEX variable. As a relative newcomer to the AHS I am
trying to familiarize myself with what the AHS is able to tell me. As part
of this process, I was looking at the gender variables and it became
apparent after reading the various definitions of this variable that I was
not sure how to interpret findings related to female householders. For
example, what, if anything, does the finding that 40% of households have
female householders (HHSEX=2) mean?
