Subject: AHS 2001 Web Site Updated

The HUD USER web site for the AHS 2001 national survey,
https://www.huduser.gov/portal/datasets/ahs.html, has been updated.  The
new files include:

* The ASCII version of the microdata.
* The income limits file.
* The Q-Code for the questionaire instrument.

PLEASE NOTE ALSO that the address for the mailing list has changed.  Send

Subject: AHS 2002 Metro Survey Update

The fieldwork on the 2002 metro survey is 79 percent complete, way ahead of
schedule.  It looks like we might be done by the end of September.  That's
about two months early.  Unfortunately, some of the necessary data
processing tasks were scheduled under the assumption that the fieldwork
would take longer.  Thus, we may not be able to speed up the release of the
dataset as much as you might think.  However, this is still good news and
gives us some cushion against later delays.

This survey was the first that made heavy use of the early CAPI results to
advise the regional supervisors about which field representatives were
having problems and which were doing well.  The computerized transmission
meant that the supervisors got this feedback in time to make changes while
the survey was still running.  We believe that this will improve the
quality of the data collected.  The AHS team at the Census Bureau gets the
credit for inventing this new process.

Subject: Neighbor Codes

In the AHS, the variable "NEIGH"  (indicating units that belong to a
particular neighborhood cluster) does not seem to appear in the data sets
after 1995.  Am I correct in assuming that the neighborhood cluster concept
has been dropped from the survey?

Subject: AHS: Problem with 2001 ASCII Files

There is a problem with the ASCII version of the 2001 AHS microdata on the
HUD USER web site.  In the process of converting the SAS files to ASCII, we
also combined the records of the Person and Homimp files, so that there is
only one record per housing unit (instead of one per person and one per
alteration & repair project, respectively).  We made the mistake at HUD.
The Census Bureau had nothing to do with it.  The SAS files are fine.

I apologize to those of you who downloaded the bad files.  We will put up
new ones as quickly as possible.  I'll send out another notice when they
are ready.

Subject: AHS 2001: Maybe the ASCII file isn't fixed

We have had a report about some odd things about the homimp file in the
fixed ASCII version of the 2001 dataset.  If you use homimp and haven't
downloaded the new version, please wait until we check it out.

This does not apply to the SAS version.

Subject: AHS 2001 Is Really Okay

It turned out that the problem report concerning the new version of the
2001 ASCII file was a false alarm.  We rechecked it anyway and found no
problems.  (I'm glad I'm not the only one who does that sort of thing.)

So, the ASCII version is okay to download.

Subject: Language of Interview

Could someone tell me if the AHS interviews are conducted in any
language other than English, and if so, if there is a way to identify
those cases in which the interview was not conducted in English?

Also, I have not found a question relating to the primary language that
is spoken within the household.  Am I overlooking anything?  (I am aware

of the new questions regarding nativity and citizenship).

Thanks for any help that you might be able to provide.
