A development in Fort Worth, Texas, is demonstrating how affordable housing, as part of a mixed-use, mixed-income development coupled with social services, can uplift a neighborhood and help break an intergenerational cycle of poverty. Developers of the Columbia at Renaissance Square apartments, a 140-unit project that is the first of several housing phases at a 200-acre site, have partnered with Atlanta-based Purpose Built Communities to implement their model of social change. The approach relies on three focus areas: mixed-income housing, community health and wellness, and a cradle-to-college education pipeline. Crucial to the success of the model are the partnerships built among area service providers, employers, and educational and health institutions. A "community quarterback" organization helps to coordinate the collective effort of stakeholders to ensure effective programming that can make a substantial difference in the lives of families who call Columbia at Renaissance Square home.
