The national supply of affordable rentals is shrinking. One out of three homes with rents below $400 were lost between 1999 and 2009. Despite new construction, the cost of renting housing has not become affordable to low- and moderate-income households. Because preservation of existing rental units offers many advantages over new construction we will be examining efforts to preserve affordable housing on June 28.

The program begins with PD&R’s Quarterly Update on the nation’s housing markets by Kevin Kane, PD&R Chief Market Analyst. He will be followed by a panel of practitioners including Stacie Young of The Preservation Compact for Cook County and Anne Ray of the Shimberg Center. Margaret Salazar, Associate Deputy Assistant Secretary for HUD’s Office of Affordable Housing Preservation will moderate. HUD officials, practitioners, and researchers will discuss solutions to preserving affordable rental housing.
