Grants Encourage Research and Scholarship

HUD's Office of University Partnerships recently announced the winners of the 2009 Doctoral Dissertation Research Grant (DDRG) program for students who are on the road to becoming the nation’s housing professionals, researchers, and teachers. The DDRG program seeks to encourage and expand upon college- and university-based research that supports federal problem-solving and policymaking, particularly in areas deemed relevant to HUD’s policy priorities, annual goals, and objectives. Winning grantees will be investigating topics such as suburban poverty, community development, elder homelessness, the relationship of subsidized housing to crime, the homeownership-citizenship connection, integration in suburbia, and housing voucher-related mobility.

The DDRG program funds accredited universities to support doctoral research on housing and community development issues, thus providing doctoral candidates with a forum for sharing their findings and producing research that may prove useful in HUD's policymaking efforts. In FY 2009, a total of $200,000 was awarded in grants of up to $25,000 for a two-year period of performance.
