From the Assistant Secretary:
How Housing Matters Conference

On November 2, 2011, several hundred people from different disciplines gathered in Washington, D.C. for the How Housing Matters Conference that was co-sponsored by PD&R, the McArthur Foundation, and the National Building Museum. Assistant Secretary Bostic discusses the many takeaways from the discussions of how housing is a platform for education, economic opportunity, and health.

Public-Private Partnership Closes Funding Gap for Affordable Housing

New Market Tax Credit Program funds were used to complete the funding stream for the development of Jazz @ Walter Circle in East St. Louis, Illinois. The mixed-use facility — which includes 74 units of public and housing-choice-voucher rental units for low-income seniors, a community center, office and retail space, a grocery store, and community gardens — is scheduled for completion in 2012.

Housing Recovery on the Gulf Coast
CDBG funds were used to rebuild in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Faced with very high levels of destruction and urgent need to help people begin rebuilding their lives, Louisiana and Mississippi offered homeowners compensation grants, which did not have to be used exclusively for rehabilitation. Texas, with many fewer affected homeowners, provided funds that could only be used for home repair. Recent research from PD&R examines how the grants were used and evaluates the different models of homeowner assistance offered by the three states.
