Fostering Innovations in Housing

From June 10–12, 2022, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the National Association of Home Builders hosted the Innovative Housing Showcase in Washington, D.C., which included an introductory event — “Addressing Housing Supply Shortages Through Innovative Building Technology.” Panelists and presenters laid out challenges to and future directions for innovations in housing. They reported how economic headwinds such as rising interest rates, inadequate housing supply, a construction labor shortage, and regulatory burdens continue to put upward pressure on housing costs. Innovating new solutions in worker training, construction methods, and building technology is an important undertaking to promote long-term housing affordability across U.S. housing markets and for households across income levels.

Permanent Supportive Housing for New Jersey Veterans
In November 2021, the nonprofit service organization Soldier On, in partnership with Winn Development, opened the Gordon H. Mansfield Veterans Village in Tinton Falls, New Jersey. Modeled after similar Soldier On developments in Massachusetts, this community has 70 units of permanent supportive housing for veterans transitioning out of homelessness. Case managers and other staff help residents meet their medical, financial, and personal needs. Local food banks, businesses, and other nonprofits also provide basic necessities and resources for residents. Low-income housing tax credit equity and other federal, state, local, and philanthropic sources financed the $22.5 million project.

The 2022 Innovative Housing Showcase: An After-Action Review of Events and a Reflection on Related HUD Research
The 2022 Innovative Housing Showcase, a partnership between the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the National Association of Home Builders, featured numerous full-size prototypes of houses and building technology demonstrations for thousands of visitors on Washington, D.C.’s National Mall from June 10–12, 2022. Innovative building and construction technologies such as manufactured and modular housing, volumetric construction, 3D concrete printing, insulated concrete forms, and panelized wall systems are addressing the lack of affordable housing through alternative materials and practices that reduce costs and construction time. For decades, HUD has supported manufactured housing to increase affordability and continues to fund research on innovative building materials and techniques.
