Creating Urgently Needed Affordable Senior Housing for Suburban Rockland County, New York

Seniors in Rockland County, New York, face significant challenges in finding affordable rental housing. To address this issue, the Sisters of Charity Housing Development Corporation partnered with Rockabill Development to create Vincent’s Village, an affordable housing development for seniors aged 55 years and older in the city of Nanuet. Opened in 2021, Vincent’s Village provides 93 low-income housing units, as well as extensive health and wellness services and communal spaces that offer social programming. By enhancing the livelihood of the senior population in the city, the development addresses the affordable housing need identified in the city’s comprehensive plan while also helping seniors age in place and remain connected to the larger community.

Breaking Barriers to Affordable and Abundant Housing: A German-U.S. Comparison of Publicly Led Development Projects

This publication identifies ways cities can support the development of mixed-used, transit-adjacent housing. The author compares urban development policy approaches in the United States and Germany and highlights publicly led projects in three cities in the United States — Atlanta, Georgia; St. Louis, Missouri; and Seattle, Washington — and three cities in Germany — Berlin, Frankfurt, and Munich. After identifying barriers to publicly led development, such as resident opposition to new construction, the author identifies promising ways the highlighted cities advanced significant new housing construction.

Helping Public Housing Agencies Implement an Alternative Rent Policy: A Technical Assistance Summary Report from the Rent Reform Demonstration

The Rent Reform Demonstration tested an alternative rent-setting system for families using housing choice vouchers (HCVs) to encourage employment and reduce administrative burdens and costs without causing unnecessary hardship. Starting in 2015, the demonstration enrolled approximately 6,600 HCV-assisted households across four Moving to Work (MTW) public housing agency (PHA) sites. The current report documents the technical support provided by the study team, illustrates operationally how an interested PHA could implement various elements of the alternative rent policy tested in the Rent Reform Demonstration, serves as a resource for PHAs thinking about how to operationalize the Housing Opportunity Through Modernization Act of 2016 statute that requires the use of the prior year’s income, and provides guidance to PHAs implementing new rent policies in the MTW Expansion for Cohort 2, Stepped and Tiered Rent Demonstration.

Call For Nominations: 2024 HUD Secretary's Award for Excellence in Healthy Homes

Deadline extended! The deadline to submit nominations for the 2024 HUD Secretary’s Award for Excellence in Healthy Homes has been extended to May 29, 2024, at 11:59 pm ET.

Since 2015, the HUD Secretary’s Award for Excellence in Healthy Homes has recognized agencies, organizations, and Tribes that advance healthy homes while advancing affordable housing, strengthening environmental justice, and addressing climate resilience. In 2024, one organization will be honored for its holistic approach to fostering a healthy homes culture across six key impact areas. Nominations are due May 29, 2024, at 11:59 ET.

Call For Papers: Cityscape Symposium on Housing for Those Who Have Served in Our Military

In 2025, Cityscape intends to publish several articles in a symposium that explore research on housing for U.S. military veterans and their families. We seek quality studies across a broad range of areas related but not limited to: housing instability, supported housing or other publicly subsidized housing, individual or policy-level housing interventions, and other housing-related topics that include Veterans. A central goal is to identify a collection of papers that examine housing for Veterans from multiple disciplines and topics. Papers may be from any discipline but broad enough for a multidisciplinary audience. We are especially interested in articles that are not dedicated to health outcomes. Articles must be original work not published elsewhere.

Papers deemed appropriate for the symposium will be peer reviewed and may need to be revised and resubmitted before a final decision on publication is made. To be considered for the Cityscape symposium on Housing for Those Who Have Served in Our Military, proposals are due by December 1, 2024. For those invited to submit, full manuscript submissions will be expected by May 1, 2025.

As part of HUD’s national “Road to Innovation” tour, PD&R’s Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary Solomon Greene has visited Detroit, Minneapolis, Seattle, and Portland, touring and elevating housing developments that exemplify innovative approaches to affordable and eco-friendly housing. The tour will culminate in Washington, D.C. with HUD’s 2024 Innovative Housing Showcase slated for June 7–9 on the National Mall.
