Vertically Integrated Modular Housing Project Opens in Auburn, Washington
Blokable at Phoenix Rising consists of 12 units of affordable housing development built in Auburn, Washington, using modular construction. Modular homes are mass-produced, prefabricated residential structures that can be combined with other modules or permanent fixtures onsite to form single- or multifamily dwellings. Blokable, a Seattle-based manufacturer of modular homes, developed Phoenix Rising as its prototype multifamily building. The modular construction process generated considerable time, cost, and energy savings. In addition, as a vertically integrated firm, Blokable controlled the entire development process, including site selection, assembly, and financing. Blokable at Phoenix Rising represents the next step of earlier work done by the company to create single-module accessory dwelling units, which served as a prototype that generated the know-how needed for a multifamily modular project. Learning About Native Communities at the National Tribal Housing Summit
In the Leadership Message, PD&R Deputy Assistant Secretary for Policy Development Brian McCabe discusses HUD’s recent participation at the National Tribal Housing Summit in St. Paul, Minnesota. For PD&R leadership, the summit represented an opportunity to get input on HUD’s Learning Agenda, understand the research needs of tribal communities, and consider ways that research and policy development can improve housing conditions and opportunities in Native communities. HUD’s participation in this conference builds on PD&R’s longstanding efforts to improve housing outcomes for tribal communities. Opportunities to Improve Outcomes for Families with Children through the Community Choice Demonstration
Demonstration projects and related research are important ways PD&R establishes evidence for policy development. Recently, PD&R released its plan for evaluating the Community Choice Demonstration (CCD) project, which outlines how the office will measure program effectiveness. The trial is expected to enroll more than 15,000 families with children in the Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) program and provide mobility-related services to more than 9,000 of those families to help them move to areas of higher opportunity. The CCD aims to identify the services or combination of services that are most influential and cost effective for helping HCV families with children move to areas of opportunity.
