The second issue of "ResearchWorks" is now available!

ResearchWorks - the newest periodical from HUD's Office
of Policy Development and Research (PD&R) - brings
housing policy research together with the latest news
from the field.

This second issue highlights several promising strategies
for improving communities by providing greater access to
housing and housing finance for all individuals.

The lead article describes the successes of the Southwest
Fair Housing Council (SWFHC) in providing fair housing
education and enforcement. Recognized by HUD as a Best
Practice for their Housing Industry Collaborative
Program, the SWFHC partners with local private
organizations, municipal and county governments, and
associations to offer training and outreach. SWFHC
received a Fair Housing Initiative Grant that enables
them to conduct workshops on fair lending and predatory
lending for several key audiences, including first-time
homebuyers, consumer groups, associations, and real
estate specialists.

This issue also showcases the successful collaboration
between the Partnership for Advancing Technology in
Housing (PATH) and one of its partner organizations, the
Community Development Corporation of Brownsville (CDCB).
Together, PATH and CDCB is producing energy-efficient,
900-square-foot, three-bedroom homes for $29,000 in
Cameron Park, TX - a colonia known to be one of the
nation's poorest communities.

The three phases of HUD's recently completed Housing
Discrimination Study (HDS 2000) are also presented in
this issue. Phase 1 examined discrimination against
African Americans and Hispanics, Phase 2 looked at
discrimination against Asian and Pacific Islanders, and
Phase 3 assessed discrimination levels against Native
American homebuyers in three states.

The FIRST initiative is introduced in an article about
housing accessibility. This HUD-sponsored education
program seeks to provide homebuilders, developers,
architects, and designers with the latest training and
technical guidance on how to comply with the
accessibility requirements of the Fair Housing Act.

The final article in ResearchWorks describes a University
of Washington (UW) Community Outreach Partnership Center
(COPC) program. UW's COPC program gets students and
professors involved in neighborhood revitalization, small
business assistance, and information technology job
skills training in an effort to enrich both the local
community and the educational experiences of its
students.
