Last Thursday, HUD and the Census Bureau released the
2002 American Housing Survey Metro Survey Data public use
file and Version 1.20D of the AHS Codebook. Also newly
released is a data dictionary in ASCII format.

The AHS Metro Survey covers 13 metropolitan areas. As
these metro areas haven't been surveyed since the 1997
Census redesign, you can expect to see a number of
changes. The metropolitan areas surveyed are:

o Anaheim-Santa Ana, CA
o Buffalo, NY
o Charlotte, NC-SC
o Columbus, OH
o Dallas, TX
o Fort Worth-Arlington, TX
o Kansas City, MO-KS
o Miami-Ft. Lauderdale, FL
o Milwaukee, WI
o Phoenix, AZ
o Portland, OR-WA
o Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario, CA
o San Diego, CA

Data on commuting and working from home is new to the
metro survey this year. This data has been included in
the journey-to-work module in the national surveys, but
has never before been included in the metro survey.

The metro survey data is available in both SAS and ASCII
formats. SAS users can use the file flattener program to
convert the SAS data to a single file format in SAS. The
AHS codebook is available in PDF format.

The new version of the Codebook is updated to include
documentation for the 2002 metro survey, and there's a
new section on how to use the Codebook. Another new
function makes it easier to navigate the variables detail
section using Adobe Acrobat Reader's search function.
Additionally, the new version corrects some errors and
ommissions.
