The May/June 2003 Issue of FieldWorks Highlights Programs

HUD PD&R recently released the latest issue of "FieldWorks", a
bi-monthly newsletter for practitioners that provides
practical information on noteworthy programs. This issue is
focused on innovative programs that promote homeownership for
low- and moderate- income communities.

Articles in this issue of "FieldWorks" cover a wide variety of
topics, ranging from employer-assisted housing programs to the
use of manufactured housing. The five stories are highlighted
below.

"Select Milwaukee and Employer-Assisted Housing": This article
highlights Select Milwaukee, a non-profit that is assisting
several companies in the area to develop employer-assisted
housing programs. A closer look at the Harley Davidson Walk-
to-Work program is also provided.

"Apache Dawn Provides Homes and Jobs in Indian Country": The
White Mountain Apache Housing Authority is stimulating the
economy, creating jobs, and providing homeownership
opportunities to tribal families through its Apache Dawn,
lease-purchase program program. This article provides
interesting details about the program and the emphasis that
the Housing Authority has placed on hiring tribally-owned
businesses to complete construction of 300 single-family
homes.

"Colorado Department of Human Services: Moving the Disabled
Into Homeownership": This story takes a closer look at a
state-wide Section 8 homeownership program. Spearheaded by the
Colorado Supportive Housing and Homeless Programs Division,
with critical support provided by HUD and the Colorado Housing
Finance Authority, this program provides homeownership
opportunities for low-income disabled families in Colorado.

"Noji Gardens: A New Frontier for Manufactured Housing":
Through a program to combine stick-built homes and
manufactured housing in the same development, HomeSight, a
nonprofit organization in Seattle, reduced the cost of homes
by 15 percent and provided affordable homeownership
opportunities to local homebuyers. This article highlights
this innovative development, called Noji Gardens, and provides
interesting details about the 75-unit development.

"Individual Development Accounts (IDAs): An Asset-Building
Approach to Homeownership": This final article describes how
IDAs can be used to promote homeownership among low- and
moderate-income communities. To illustrate the role of IDAs
in helping families break out of the 'rent cycle', we take a
closer look at an organization in the Marshall Heights
neighborhood of Washington, DC that's working to promote
homeownership and stop neighborhood decline through the use of
this innovative financial instrument.

As always, "FieldWorks" provides readers with a list of
internet resources and upcoming events that are specific to
the newsletter's highlighted subject matter.
