"PATH Technology Roadmap: Energy Efficiency In Existing
Homes" (Volume One: Technology Brainstorming) is the last
in a series of four technology roadmaps developed to help
the housing industry make informed decisions about
research and development (R&D) investments. The Energy
Efficiency In Existing Homes roadmap focuses specifically
on improving energy efficiency in existing housing. It
describes the challenges and outlines activities and
strategies for improving comfort and performance in an
informed, cost-effective, and cohesive manner. Covered
strategies include promoting new technologies, evaluating
products and processes for retrofit, building
capabilities among trade contractors, and identifying
potential consumer incentives.

The vision set forth in Energy Efficiency In Existing
Homes is that by 2010, consumers will be able to
substantially improve the energy efficiency of their
homes and achieve positive cash flow in the process. That
is, energy savings on monthly utility bills will more
than offset the monthly costs for financing the
installation of the energy-efficient technologies. An
organized infrastructure for marketing and installing the
necessary technologies will also be in place.

Addressing residential energy consumption issues requires
the examination of five areas, including:
o Building envelope technologies.
o HVAC systems and controls.
o Appliances and lighting.
o Distributed generation.
o Outreach strategies and tools.
Specific needs and opportunities related to these
categories are discussed in the full report.

To meet the goals outlined in this report, five key
action items are discussed. These include aggressively
promoting new technologies through cooperative R&D;
conducting evaluations of retrofit products, materials,
and systems; introducing trade contractor energy upgrade
training and credentialing; conducting outreach and
providing incentives to consumers; and engaging in
supporting activities. By addressing these issues through
research, the home building industry will continue to
play a key role in providing affordable, durable housing
for America's families.
