TECHNOLOGY ROADMAP: INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY TO ACCELERATE AND STREAMLINE HOME BUILDING

> To the casual reader of HUD USER's weekly listserv
message, this may sound a bit like 'déjà vu all over
again,' but the fact is, the Partnership for Advancing
Technology in Housing (PATH) is developing Technology
Roadmaps to help the building industry arrive at some
very worthwhile destinations. This week's listserv
highlights another in the PATH Technology Roadmap series,
"Information Technology To Accelerate and Streamline Home
Building" (Year One Progress Report.)

The Technology Roadmap series is designed to help the
housing industry make informed decisions about research
and development (R&D) investments, and Information
Technology to Accelerate and Streamline Home Building is
no exception. PATH's latest Roadmap examines how
information technology can greatly improve the speed and
efficiency of the entire home building process. The
report explores how computers, software, and
communications (especially wireless technology and the
Internet) can enhance speed, efficiency, and quality in
home building.

Specifically, the report looks at integrating software
packages to speed up the entire home building process --
from design through materials lists to completion of the
home; applying an approach known as Enterprise Resource
Planning to home building; improving the quality and
quantity of home building information available on the
World Wide Web; and speeding up the
permitting/inspection/approval process.

The vision for this Roadmap calls for information to be
available when and where it's most needed, so that
participants in the home building process can perform
their jobs in a timely manner, and with greater accuracy
and efficiency along the way.
Four strategies for achieving the vision set forth in
PATH Technology Roadmap: Information Technology to
Accelerate and Streamline Home Building were devised,
including:
o Develop a common language.
o Streamline the regulatory process.
o Build a non-commercial information portal.
o Create production management systems from concept
to closure.
Benefits of each strategy and tactics for implementation
are discussed in the full report.

As with other PATH Roadmaps in this series, the
Partnership believes that, by addressing these issues
through research, the home building industry will further
enhance its role in providing affordable, durable housing
for America's families.
