Spanish origin

I was tabulating Spanish origin on the 2003 file to ascertain how many householders were of Hispanic origin.

My results were confusing. Using SPAN1 on the flat file or the variable HHSPAN on the NEWHOUSE module yielded 11,039,262 householders of Spanish origin. However, when crosstabulating the SPAN variable with the REL variable (where REL=1 or REL=2), only 4,972,392 householders were categorized as of Spanish origin. What would explain this discrepancy? Is my conception of what the variables are capturing wrong? Please advise. Thanks.
