There is no state variable on the AHS national file, due to confidentiality
restrictions.  For example, if state were identified it could be combined
with SMSA to identify areas that are too small to meet the Census Bureau's
confidentiality test.

I cannot seem to find a State code variable in the 2001 national data when
importing the SAS dataset or the ASCII dataset. Is there no variable to
indicate which U.S. state the observation is from?
