A Second Look at FHA’s Evolving Market Shares by Race and Ethnicity
The tightening of conventional mortgage credit resulting from the 2007 housing market collapse caused a significant increase in the share of FHA-insured mortgages issued for home purchases. A recent analysis from HUD confirms that this increased reliance on FHA loans is still high among racial and ethnic minorities, suggesting that access to the conventional mortgage market for these groups is an important issue for policymakers to consider and address.
