West Hollywood, California: Housing for Persons with Disabilities at Sierra Bonita Apartments

HUD User publishes a series of case studies based on federal, state, and local strategies that increase affordable housing opportunities and support sustainable community development. The projects and community development efforts featured in these reports have demonstrated innovation through a multitude of partnerships and initiatives.

A recent case study details the Sierra Bonita Apartments in West Hollywood. Developed by the West Hollywood Community Housing Corporation, the 50,000 square foot building provides 41 one-bedroom apartments for very low-income disabled residents, as well as some commercial space. Each unit features energy-efficient appliances and the overall building was constructed according to the city's 2007 Green Building Ordinance, thus ensuring reduced living costs for residents. The award-winning project has stimulated revitalization efforts that had stalled during the recent recession.
