2018 Housing and Community Design Award Winners

Congratulations to the recipients of the 2018 Housing and Community Design Awards, selected jointly by the American Institute of Architects and the Department of Housing and Urban Development. These awards recognize architecture that demonstrates overall design excellence in navigating the needs and constraints of affordable housing.

Five 88 Apartments, located in San Francisco's Mission Bay neighborhood, received the 2018 Excellence in Affordable Housing Design Award. With 200 units of affordable family housing, Five 88 is the city's largest new affordable development to open in a decade and sets a striking visual tone in a rapidly developing area. Five 88 increases the availability of amenity-rich and transit-accessible housing to families with incomes between 50 and 60 percent of the area median income, while the project's 10,000 square feet of retail space further enhances the neighborhood's economic development. Five 88 was designed by David Baker Architects and developed by the Chinatown Community Development Center.

Station 162 Apartments, just outside Portland, Oregon, in Gresham, received the 2018 Alan J. Rothman Award, which recognizes housing projects demonstrating excellence in improving accessibility for individuals with ability constraints. Station 162 was designed by DAO Architecture for developer QUAD — Quadriplegics United Against Dependency — and contains 25 fully accessible units for wheelchair-bound individuals and 19 adaptable units for more mobile elderly residents. QUAD has long specialized in developing affordable accessible housing, having opened its first independent living center a decade prior to the Americans with Disabilities Act.
