Fostering Housing Innovation to Improve Affordability and Resilience


In early June 2019, HUD partnered with the National Association of Home Builders to host the inaugural Innovative Housing Showcase in Washington, DC. The five day event featured federal officials, congressional representatives, researchers, and private-sector professionals who came together to discuss the need for housing innovation to improve housing affordability and storm resistance. The event's keynote addresses and panel discussions explored strategies to foster innovation and the federal government's role, among other relevant topics.

Karuk Tribe of California Builds Its First LIHTC Project
Karuk Homes 1, an affordable 30-unit housing development of single-family homes that opened in 2017, is the first project by Northern California's Karuk Tribe to receive funding via the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) program. The Karuk Tribe was also one of the first Native American tribes in the state to receive a LIHTC award via a set-aside established by the Native American Apportionment Pilot. The $11.4 million development was built in an existing Yreka subdivision and contains a mix of three-, four-, and five-bedroom layouts specifically designed for multigenerational families.

Innovative Housing Showcase 2019
The first Innovative Housing Showcase highlighted inventive new designs and strategies for building affordable, resilient homes. HUD Secretary Ben Carson delivered the opening address, commencing five days of panel discussions, exhibits, and more. A range of exhibitors constructed demonstration houses on the National Mall. HUD hopes to hold another showcase in 2020.
