The Summer 2017 issue of Evidence Matters: Transforming Knowledge Into Housing and Community Development Policy, which focuses on housing for seniors, is now available. This issue examines the housing challenges of seniors, such as affordability, accessibility, and social isolation. Additionally, this issue of Evidence Matters highlights policies and practices that aim to address these challenges in order to improve quality of life for seniors.

Key Findings

  • Programs and research studies such as Community Aging in Place—Advancing Better Living for Elders (CAPABLE) and Support and Services at Home have demonstrated improved health outcomes and cost savings for the seniors they serve, but such programs will require scaling up in order to meet the needs of a growing older population.

  • Local initiatives that involve the coordination of the public, private, and nonprofit sectors can help seniors remain independent through programs that allow seniors to remain in their homes and ensure their mobility throughout the community.

  • Seniors living in rural areas face additional challenges in remaining independent. These rural communities often rely on volunteer organizations to deliver a holistic set of services for seniors.
