Sam Young

Sam Young is the Great Lakes Regional Director and HUB Director for region’s V (Great Lakes), VI (Southwest), VII (Great Plains), and VIII (Rocky Mountain) for the Economic Market Analysis Division (EMAD) in HUD's Office of Policy Development and Research. He began his career in 2010 as a field economist in Denver and rose to senior economist in that office. In that role, his work concentrated on housing market research of military-impacted markets that eventually led to an Insights paper in 2015. Additionally, his work encompassed the fracking boom in the United States, and he led the Gas/Oil Task Force, which led to speaking at several events and published research, some of which is on huduser.gov. In 2016, he moved to the Chicago HUD office and has served as the Great Lakes Regional Director since 2018 and managed the Northwest region from 2020 through 2022. The Great Lakes team handles most of the EMAD contracting work and one spearheaded the integration of maps into EMAD’s published work, and he is proud to work with these dedicated economists. In 2024, he became one of two EMAD HUB Directors.

Mr. Young earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics, International Emphasis, from the University of Colorado at Boulder, and a Master of Science from Colorado State University. He enjoys sailing and taking in the views of Lake Michigan.
