New Consolidated Planning/CHAS Data

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has released an update of the Comprehensive Housing Affordability Strategy (CHAS) data. These data provide counts of the numbers of households that fit certain combinations of HUD-specified criteria such as housing needs, HUD-defined income limits (primarily 30, 50, and 80 percent of median income), and household types of particular interest to planners, researchers, housing advocates, and policymakers. The information is used by local governments in the consolidated planning process and by HUD in developing allocation formulas for use in distributing funds to local jurisdictions.

These data are compiled in a special tabulation from the Census Bureau's annual American Community Survey (ACS) that offers timely data for the period between censuses, thus providing an up-to-date picture of local conditions. Comments and suggestions regarding the 2009 CHAS data should be sent to Paul.A.Joice@hud.gov with "CHAS Feedback" in the subject line.
