Retail in Underserved Communities: Free Webinar Held by the Urban Land Institute

On behalf of HUD's Office of Policy Development and Research, you are invited to a free webinar from the Urban Land Institute, open exclusively to ULI members and invited guests.

The webinar will feature findings from the new report, Retail in Underserved Communities, which was produced by the Urban Land Institute in cooperation with the Office of Policy Development and Research, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the International Council of Shopping Centers.

From food deserts to communities without adequate retail services, the landscape is changing. Developers are coming into cities where they had previously only located in suburbs. Retail now sits below apartments in new configurations. Cities have spurred catalytic projects through creative financing and strong leadership. Is progress being made? How long does it take? The Urban Land Institute, in conjunction with the Office of Policy Development and Research, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the International Council of Shopping Centers, held a forum earlier this year to explore the topic. This webinar features the release and discussion of the new report Retail in Underserved Communities, which was produced from the forum.

Learning objectives of the webinar:

  • How do we really define underserved?
  • What are some of the barriers to improving retail in these neighborhoods? What does it take?
  • Where are the opportunities for retailers, public officials, developers?
  • The story behind the success of East Liberty in Pittsburgh that walks through an amazing transformation now anchored by a Home Depot, Whole Foods and new Google offices.

Steve Mosites, President, The Mosites Company (Developer of East Liberty project in Pittsburgh)
