Kings Beach, California: Affordable Green Housing for Service Industry Workers

HUD USER publishes a series of case studies based on federal, state, and local strategies that increase affordable housing opportunities and support sustainable community development. The projects and community development efforts featured in these reports have demonstrated innovation through a multitude of partnerships and initiatives.

The Kings Beach Housing Now project built in Kings Beach, California, along the north shore of Lake Tahoe, replaces a host of dilapidated and overcrowded cabins, trailers, and motels with 77 energy-efficient homes across five scattered sites for low-income workers in the recreation and hospitality industries. Domus Development, which built the new project, coordinated carefully with county and regional planning agencies, local organizations, and members of the community in order to meet the needs and concerns of the community while preserving the natural resources and beauty of the area.

Visit HUD USER's Case Studies page to learn more about affordable housing preservation and to view other promising examples of how communities across the nation are raising the bar on sustainable community development.
