Message from PD&R Leadership:
Housing as a Portal to Better Educational and Life Outcomes

Research indicates that the quality, stability, and affordability of housing can affect educational performance throughout all stages of life. Assistant Secretary for Policy Development and Research Katherine O'Regan discusses how HUD initiatives, as well as partnerships between public housing agencies and school systems, are working to align housing and school programs to promote better life and educational outcomes for low-income children.

In Practice:
Mixed-Use, Mixed-Income Redevelopment in Cincinnati

In 2014, the Cincinnati Center City Development Corporation (3CDC) opened the second phase of Mercer Commons, a mixed-use and mixed-income project in the city's Over-the-Rhine neighborhood (OTR). This phase created 67 apartments, with 30 of the units affordable to households earning between 50 and 60 percent of the area median income, thus helping to maintain OTR's economic diversity. With over 13,000 square feet of commercial space, Mercer Commons is also helping to extend commercial development in the neighborhood.

Policy Update:
Housing's and Neighborhoods' Role in Shaping Children's Future

A wide array of research has linked various dimensions of housing — quality (the physical condition and safety of the home), crowding, affordability, housing assistance, ownership, and stability — to children's development and well-being. As researchers further explore how housing and neighborhoods matter for families and children, policymakers are using this knowledge to focus on making housing and neighborhoods places of opportunity.

Spotlight on PD&R Data:
U.S. Housing Market Conditions

PD&R's U.S. Housing Market Conditions (USHMC) website contains national, regional, state, metropolitan, and local data and analysis in one location. Featured USHMC charts highlight changes in the annual and quarterly household count by total and by household age.

Housing Barriers to College Success
Recent research shows that housing conditions influence postsecondary educational outcomes. Many college students struggle to find adequate, affordable housing near their campus, and those who lack sufficient financial aid to cover living expenses often compensate in ways that make them less likely to graduate — by working more hours, enrolling part-time, or not purchasing key resources like textbooks.
