A Look at U.S. Efforts To Encourage ADU Production

Housing advocates and policymakers have grown increasingly interested in expanded production of accessory dwelling units (ADUs) as an important strategy for increasing housing supply. On February 1, 2022, the White House convened a virtual discussion aimed at identifying strategies to make ADU construction easier. Panelists discussed the role of ADUs in increasing the supply of affordable housing, described efforts from across the nation to streamline the ADU permitting and construction process for homeowners, and examined ways to make ADU financing more accessible.

In Practice:
Corey Jones Isle Provides Affordable Homeownership Opportunities in Delray Beach, Florida
Opened in 2021, Corey Jones Isle is a 10-unit ownership development of single-family detached houses in Delray Beach, Florida. The houses, a mix of one- and two-story units in a Caribbean architectural style, were priced to be affordable to low- and moderate-income families. The Delray Beach Community Land Trust was the developer for the $2.5 million project, which features attached garages and ample outdoor space for residents in the form of patios and porches.

Spotlight on PD&R Data:
Examining Housing Experiences by Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity
In the data spotlight, HUD's Veronica Helms, Emily Molfino, and Ben Winter discuss the addition of sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) questions in the U.S. Census Bureau's Household Pulse Survey and highlight the latest findings on the intersectionality of SOGI, race, ethnicity, and housing status. The analysis also represents HUD's first estimate of the number of LGBTQ+ HUD-assisted households. Including SOGI questions in federal surveys helps researchers and policymakers understand the particular housing needs of the LGBTQ+ community and ensure equitable access to federal housing assistance.

International & Philanthropic:
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development
The latest update of the International and Philanthropic Affairs Division discusses the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), which aims to improve the economic and social well-being of people worldwide through research that informs policy. HUD engages closely with OECD's Working Party on Urban Policy (WPURB) ― a forum of practitioners who assess how member countries manage urban policy, affordable housing issues, and other urban development topics. Deputy assistant secretary for economic affairs at HUD's Office of Policy Development and Research Kurt Usowski serves as delegate and vice chair of WPURB.
