NEW REPORTS

3D Concrete Printed Construction Systems Part 1: Identifying Barriers and Opportunities, Market Research Findings - Final Report

Prepared by Home Innovation Research Labs for HUD’s Office of Policy Development and Research, the 3D Concrete Printed Construction Systems research study draws on interviews of home builders and contractors, visits to job sites, and a national survey of 305 home builders to understand the challenges and opportunities in accelerating the adoption of three-dimensional concrete printing (3DCP) technology for residential buildings. This report is the first part of a two-part primer document and gives an overview of the potential for 3DCP technology by summarizing the qualitative market research results based on the focus groups and surveys. The authors identify the barriers to adopting 3DCP technology, such as the lack of building codes or standards, design and construction guidance, and the technical expertise to implement the new technology.

3D Concrete Printed Construction Systems Part 2: An Overview of 3DCP Construction Practices, Technical Findings - Final Report

In part two of the report on the 3D Concrete Printed Construction Systems research study, the authors describe the typical construction practices needed to integrate three-dimensional concrete printing technology into conventional construction by evaluating the installation of 3DCP walls with conventional building product components. The report identifies five 3DCP options — gantry, robotic arm, robot crawler, polar, and delta — and provides an overview and description of major manufacturers for each option. Additionally, the report offers information on acquiring 3DCP technology, design considerations, options for building code compliance, a characterization of the cost of construction, labor requirements, and methods for integrating the technology.
