In the final event of the yearlong HUD and Terner Labs Housing Technology series, which doubled as the finale of HUD’s 2024 Innovative Housing Showcase Educational Sessions, innovators, investors, and federal policymakers explored ways to increase production of innovative housing types. One panel focused on overcoming barriers to financing projects and the other on aligning climate and housing resources to produce affordable, energy-efficient, and climate-resilient housing.

Introducing Director of Risk and Performance Management for Technical Assistance Jie Dong

In the Leadership Message, Jie “Jay” Dong, PD&R’s new risk and performance management director for technical assistance, introduces himself and discusses his past experience in housing and community economic development and his work at HUD. He is currently leading a strategic planning process to identify near-term and long-term priorities and objectives. Among other tasks, the division will also begin identifying and leveraging existing HUD resources and innovations to streamline select Office of Technical Assistance business processes.

Developing Veterans’ Housing on a Former Army Base in Aurora, Colorado

Liberty View, an affordable housing community for aging veterans in Aurora, Colorado, opened in spring 2023. Developed by the Aurora Housing Authority, the 59-unit apartment building sits on a former military base approximately 8 miles east of downtown Denver. Liberty View is part of a larger campus offering a continuum of housing choices for veterans in need. The site was once home to the Fitzsimons Army Medical Center.

HUD at the 2024 Pan African City Exposition: Forging Partnerships to Support Housing Goals
In late June 2024, the U.S. Africa Collaborative, in partnership with the University of Maryland and Bowie State University, hosted the second Pan African City Exposition at Bowie State University. HUD Acting Secretary Adrianne Todman and PD&R’s Calvin Johnson and Cindy Campbell participated in the exposition, joining academics, government officials, civil servants, and private-sector practitioners to discuss housing security and human settlements in the context of global housing insecurities, climate change, urbanization, real estate development, and innovative building technologies.

In 2018, UPMC Health Plan, the health insurance division of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), joined the 3-year Accelerating Investments for Healthy Communities (AIHC) initiative. A project of the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy, AIHC helps healthcare organizations like UPMC Health Plan ensure that their affordable housing investments improve community health. UPMC Health Plan has continued to address the social determinants of health through a variety of investments to support affordable housing.

Strong Economic Conditions and Balanced Housing Market Conditions in the Fort Wayne HMA

The Fort Wayne, Indiana Housing Market Area (Fort Wayne HMA) has shown strong economic conditions. Nonfarm payrolls rose in 9 of the 11 sectors over the past year, led by growth in the education and health services sector. The unemployment rate in the Fort Wayne HMA during 2023 was 3.1 percent. The home sales market in the Fort Wayne HMA is balanced, with an estimated vacancy rate of 1.2 percent, and the rental market is balanced but easing. Increased construction activity since 2022 has resulted in a large supply of new apartment units entering the market.
