Ongoing Research

PD&R has two ongoing Building Technology research projects with Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

Assessment of Barriers to Adoption of Insulating Concrete Form Technology in Residential Housing – North Carolina A&T

The project involves the collection of national survey data on the use and perceptions of Insulated Concrete Forms (ICFs) among home builders, code officials, and manufacturers to assess the Barriers to Adoption of Insulating Concrete Form Technology in Residential Housing. This research is focused on relaxing the current code regulations and other barriers to the adoption of ICF technology. This project will provide statistical information on the status of ICF usage among home builders; assess the extent to which building code regulations impede the wider adoption of ICF technology in the home building industry; and recommend how to eliminate building code regulatory barriers and other constraints impeding the adoption of ICFs.

Development of Rechargeable Cement-based Batteries to Store Energy in Building Structures – Tennessee Southern University

The goal of this study is to develop rechargeable cement-based batteries to store energy in building structures, which can be applied in new apartment buildings or concrete slabs of new single-family homes. This study will produce relevant results for mechanical, efficiency, and degenerative performance of rechargeable cement-based batteries. The safety test and life cycle assessment will show the safety and long-term performance of the rechargeable cement- based battery. The pilot-scale study will provide knowledge and data on the behaviors of rechargeable cement-based batteries in real building structures. The outcomes of this study will greatly advance the knowledge regarding rechargeable cement-based batteries and contribute to the pool of data that is necessary for governmental agencies to make scientifically sound decisions. The cement-based battery technology using large building structures as sources to store energy offers a solution to enhance energy flexibility and access to low-cost energy, as well as improve the built environment and energy independence of underrepresented neighborhoods.

Minority-Serving Institutions of Higher Education: Developing Partnerships to Revitalize Communities (2003)

This publication discusses the accomplishments of grantees in PD&R's Office of University Partnership's minority-serving programs: the Historically Black Colleges and Universities program, the Hispanic-Serving Institutions Assisting Communities (HSIAC) program, the Tribal Colleges and Universities Program (TCUP), and the Alaska Native/Native Hawaiian Institutions Assisting Communities (AN/NHIAC) program.

Minority-Serving Institutions of Higher Education: Serving Communities, Revitalizing the Nation (2009)

This publication highlights additional accomplishments of grantees in PD&R's Office of University Partnership's minority-serving programs.

Historically Black Colleges & Universities: Three Case Studies of Experiences in Community Development, Volumes I and II (2007)

These in-depth case studies examine select Historically Black Colleges and Universities that participated in HUD's HBCU grant program. Volume I summarizes successful strategies and lessons learned from three HUD HBCU grant recipients and the grant program in general, and Volume II contains the full in-depth case studies of Benedict College, LeMoyne-Owen College, and Texas Southern University.

Howard University Benefits Community through Affordable Housing Developments (2018)

This case study highlights efforts by Howard University to support affordable housing efforts in the neighboring community.

Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Historically Black Colleges & Universities Grant Program (2021)

In this PD&R Edge article, Ophelia H. Wilson discusses the history of HUD's Historically Black Colleges and Universities grant program.
