In Arlington, Virginia, many low-income residents struggle to find affordable rental units despite recent progress in developing new housing. One notable recent success comes from a partnership between the Central United Methodist Church and True Ground Housing Partners, which led to the development of Unity Homes. The 144-unit development is located in one of Arlington’s densest neighborhoods, with ready access to many nearby amenities. In addition to benefiting residents, the development also serves the church through a new sanctuary, fellowship hall, and expanded daycare space.

Evaluating the RAD Choice Mobility Option, Part 3: PHA and Property Outcomes
In a 2023 report, researchers examined the property-level and PHA-level effects of the Choice Mobility option, which allows residents of RAD-converted properties to request a tenant-based (rather than project-based) voucher that they can use to move to a housing unit that better suits their needs. Although the Choice Mobility option may indirectly impact properties through unit turnover, maintenance costs at RAD properties, and demand for tenant-based vouchers, recent research shows that Choice Mobility has not negatively impacted the voucher program or properties.

WWII Emergency War Housing
In the Leadership Message, Cindy Campbell, director of PD&R’s International and Philanthropic Affairs Division, discusses the efforts of the federal government during the Second World War to ensure a sufficient amount of safe, high-quality housing for workers laboring on the home front to supply the nation’s war effort. This important work was publicized in various brochures and reports of the era and offers a glimpse of how adequate housing played a part in securing victory.
