Mortgage Payments 2001 AHS

We found syntax in the documentation for the 2001 AHS that shows that the computed total mortgage is first set to zero, and then several types of mortgage payment are added to it, which we think would produce a value of zero for total mortgage if all four types of mortgage payments were missing.  Does anyone else have any experience with this?  Or would a value of zero for total computed mortgage indicate that the mortgage had been paid off?
