Subject: AHS: 2003-2005 CINCH and Rental Dynamics

The Components of Inventory Change (CINCH) and Rental Dynamics reports
covering
2003-2005 are now available from HUD USER,
https://www.huduser.gov/datasets/cinch.html .

The CINCH program uses the longitudinal features of the American Housing
Survey
to track the changes in housing units. There are two sets of tables in
the
report: The first, "forward-looking," begins with the housing stock in
2003
and examines what happened to those units by 2005: did they leave the
stock,
stay the same, or change characteristics? The second set of tables is
called
"backward-looking." It is based on the housing stock in 2005 and
examines
the sources of those units: were they constructed since 2003, in the
stock
already, or in the stock with different characteristics?

The Rental Dynamics program uses the CINCH process to examine filtering
of the
rental housing stock. Using the same framework of two sets of tables,
it
examines changes in rental housing affordability between 2003 and 2005.

In addition to the main reports, you can download these related items:

* A report on the strategy used to derive consistent weights for the
backward-
and forward-looking tabulations.

* A dataset (in SAS and ASCII formats) which includes the special
weights and
the variables that indicate the CINCH and rental dynamics status of the
housing
units in the two years. You can link this dataset to the standard AHS
files
in order to conduct your own analysis.

* A zip archive containing the SAS programs used to generate the weights
and
the tabulations, plus documentation for the dataset.

All reports are in PDF format. This work was done by Frederick J.
Eggers and
Fouad Moumen of Econometrica, Inc., under contract with HUD.
